Steak knives that cut sideways??
I use steak knives to cut up my fruit and veggies and other things, I can't seem to find a knife block that has knives that are sharp on both sides to where it will cut straight, they are always only sharp on one side and cut sideways, and it drives me nuts! Are there knife blocks out there that have knives that will cut straight or if not what knives are good to use to cut up things straight???
I can't find anything about Forsners on the net...do you have a link to a website, or do you just know of a good store to go look for good knives? THANKS!
I am a professional butcher so knives are my living. I hear this a lot at work so I'll tell you what I tell everyone else.
The knives you are using are cheaply made out of stamped metal and are not really meant to ever be sharpened, hence the serrated edge. You need to bite the bullet and get a GOOD set of kitchen knives. My blades are all Forsners and they set me back a few hundred bucks, but it was the best money I've ever spent. They will come sharpened from the factory so be careful!!!! You should have at least 4 knives for kitchen use. A very narrow thin blade for filleting, a shorter somewhat wider paring knife for trimming veggies, a larger wide blade for cutting up the vegetables, and a 12 inch carving knife for cutting up roasts, turkeys, and the like.
As far as the steak knives you already have, use them at the table for cutting up steaks. It's what they're made for and are really useless for much else.

Knives: A Gift that keeps on giving
Knives: A Gift that keeps on giving
Knives of all types make a wonderful gift idea. Whether you need to give a wedding shower, birthday, Christmas, anniversary or other gift, a good knife will cause you to be remembered every time the gift is used. And, knives are gifts that will be used often.
Wedding showers are great times to give knives as gifts. Every couple starting a new life together needs quality kitchen accessories to have fun cooking together. Whether you choose a knife block filled with various size knives, a set of steak knives, a ceramic chef's knife or a small but very sharp paring knife, the gift will enjoy a great deal of use through the years.
For birthday, Christmas or a special occasion where you wish to give a person something special, consider a top quality pocket knife for a gift idea. Both ladies and gentlemen can enjoy a pocket knife; they come in very handy at the most unusual times. Whether a package needs to be opened or a steak cut, a quality pocket knife with a sharp edge will do the job. Pocket knives can be found in sizes from quite large to very, very small.
Martial arts fans or people with Oriental décor will enjoy a large decorative knife in an Oriental design. These knives often have a stand on which they can be displayed. Samurai swords are another type of knife that makes a great gift idea.
Hunting and fishing knives could be your selection if the recipient is an outdoor enthusiast. Filet knives, sharp skinning knives, handy knives for rigging tackle and large pocket knives make wonderful gifts for this type of person.
There is a folk lore superstition regarding the giving of a knife as a gift. If the knife is given to a friend, money must be exchanged as well. It is considered very bad luck to give someone a knife without exchanging money or the friendship will be cut by the knife. Because of this superstition, it is common that the gift of a knife will be given along with a penny, nickel or dime in the box with the knife so that the recipient can give back the coin, thereby saving the friendship from being severed by the giving of the sharp blade. The exact background of this superstition is unclear yet, even today most people will include a coin with the gift of a knife and request the coin be given back. The apparent view is that it is far better to be safe than sorry.
When choosing a knife for a gift that will be used frequently, select a tempered steel blade and a well-crafted handle that is secured firmly to the knife shank. This will insure a long lasting gift idea that will be enjoyed for many, many years.

How could I make a prop sword at the cheap?
I want to make a katana that would be easy and cheap ($20 and under)
I want it to look real and not be plastic.
No idea what a katana is.
Don't know if you actually want to hit something with it but I have a few ideas:
You can get sheets of styrofoam at craft stores. Stack them up, glue them together, cut out the shape you want, paint it, and there you go.
VERY fragile.
You can't hit anything with this sword.
Fun Foam also comes in sheets.
It's sort of like the stuff Nerf toys are made from. Available at craft stores, but it's thinner than styrofoam. You'd need more layers. Cut it out and paint it any way you want.
It would be fragile, but you could hit with it.
Cardboard is available by recycling big boxes. A little harder to work with, but you'd be able to hit something with it, and do a little damage if you glued and cut it right.
Wood is cheap these days. Head down to Home Depot and get particle board.

Swords of the Highlander Films and Series
Back in the 1980's, the film Highlander became hugely popular, with cult film fans, featuring numerous exciting sword fights, a great villain and a spectacular piece of miscasting with Frenchman, Christopher Lambert playing a Scotsman (Connor McLeod), and the very Scottish Sean Connery playing Juan Sanchez Vlla-Lobos Ramirez! Despite the quirky accents, the film gained cult status, in large part thanks to the excellent sword fights, with fans and collectors soon seeking out replicas of the many weapons used in the film.
At the start of the film story, Connor MacLeod wields a single-handed broadsword. Although no official replica exists, there are numerous unlicensed versions available to buy, mostly of decent quality although none are 100% accurate to the movie prop.
Later in the film Connor MacLeod wields an ancient Japanese Katana that once belonged to his mentor, Ramirez. Previously collectors have been forced to put up with unofficial replicas, often badly sculpted, and rarely accurate to the original film. Excitingly, United Cutlery have recently release a new, officially licensed version, that accurately matches the film versions intricately carved dragon-head handle, and featured a hand-forged carbon-steel blade. Serious collectors should spend the extra money and get this, as it is a huge improvement over previous versions.
After the first highlander film, there were several sequels, but none that were as memorable or entertaining as the first. During the 1990's a Highlander TV spinoff show was created that followed the adventures of another MacLeod family member, Duncan. Like Connor he also wielded a dragon-head katana, although of a slightly different design. The show is generally considered to be the best follow-up to the original movie and attracted a large cult following, with things eventually coming full circle with a film that united Duncan and Connor.
Like Connor's Katana, there are a number of mass-produced unlicensed replicas available of Duncan's Sword, although for copyright reasons none is an exact replica. Fortunately, collectors can now buy an officially licensed version made by United Cutlery, manufactured to the same high standards as their reproduction of Connor's sword, and also an exact copy of the prop versions used on the show. This is definitely the version collectors should go for, as it uses a higher-quality full carbon blade, and the intricate ivory dragon-head is replicated exactly using a weathered single piece resin casting that replicates the original exactly.
There are numerous other memorable swords used in the movies and series, such as the Kurgan's multi-part blade, but there are very few replicas of these available to buy, other than a few very limited editions.
The fate of the Highlander series is now unknown. The series has now finished, and recent films, while they have their loyal fans, were not particularly big commercial successes. Given the money earned by other recent sword-filled fantasy films such as 300, The Lord of the Rings and the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, it's not surprising that there is talk of re-booting the franchise with a re-make of the original. Whatever the eventual result of this, with the recent United Cutlery releases, fans of Highlander can at least own true replica's of the most iconic swords from the Highlander franchise.

Warm weather climate and concealed carry?
Okay, so I'm finally 21 and going to get my CCW permit soon. I live in sweltering Texas, where it is hot and humid practically year-round. Now, my body type is pretty lanky (6' 145 lbs).
What type of pistol do you think would be the easiest to conceal given my frame? I currently own a Smith & Wesson 3953, but am considering trading it in for something smaller and lighter (possible a Springfield XD Subcompact in 9mm).
When it comes to sweltering heat and soaring humidity, the Mississippi Delta doesn't have to bow to Texas in any respect, and we have more skeeters than most of you Texicans have to cope with.
Before I threw my pants away and started wearing kilts full time, I always wore guyabera shirts, aka Mexican Wedding Shirts. Haband sells them at a good price as does Big and Tall.com. Buy them a size or two larger than your regular shirt size.
With a guyaberra shirt and a good belt and holster, it is no trick at all to conceal handguns up to and including 5.5" Super Blackhawks.
It is much easier to conceal a handgun than most people think. You merely have to think before you move and give consideration to your cover garment.
For example, when packing a pistol on your belt, NEVER, but NEVER reach for anything on a high shelf with your gun hand, it will raise the cover garment and flash your gun. Never bend over to get something off the floor, always kneel with the gunside knee on the floor. Otherwise, even if your cover garment doesn't rise, the butt of the pistol will print through.
Don't be a cheapskate when it comes to gunleather. You've spent several hundred bucks on your pistol, and a couple hundred more on the CCW Permit and training. Don't try to skimp and get by with a $10.00 holster and a Wal-Mart belt.
Buy the best holster you can find and afford. You will probably end up with a drawer full of them over the years, most of us gun cranks do. And purchase a good solid, firm belt that fits snuggly in the belt loop or tunnel. A good belt and holster combo will pull your pistol in close to your body and it will prevent the butt from waggling around like a dog's tail. More concealed handguns are given away by a waggling butt than anything else.
As for gunleather, check out Bianchi's Pistol Pocket if you can find one, and drop by Simply Rugged's website. Rob Leahy makes come great concealment holsters, including some IWB holsters and some great pancake style holsters.
I generally go with a high ride belt holster with a thumb-break safety.
As for handguns, I highly recommend Smith & Wesson DA revolvers, such as the Model 19, Model 66, or Model 686 with 2.5", or 4" barrels. They might not hold as much ammo as one of the fancy pants flatguns, but they hit with a lot more authority. I'd rather have six .357 Magnum rounds in hand than ten 9mmP rounds.
In addition to belt guns, you should also consider pocket pistols, and by that, I suggest S&W J-frame revolvers in .357 Magnum or .38 SPL. My Always Gun is an M-640, even when I have a belt gun, the M-640 rides in a pocket or sporran pocket, but an M-49 or M-649 Bodyguard would be a great alternative as well. If you go with a J-frame snubby revolver, you need to get a pocket holster to keep gunk our of the barrel, and to prevent the front sight from rubbing holes in your pockets.
Whether you stick with the flatguns or go with revolvers, all you need is good leather, a good belt, and a bit of thought and practice to make packing iron second nature to you.
Good Shooting,
Doc

NBA Basketball - Chris Bosh to join Dwayne Wade in the Miami Heat
Dropping out of college has never really been the best advice you could give a young college freshman. But if he has the chance to make it to the NBA draft right after one year at Georgia Tech, then it might not be that bad of a choice. Christopher Wesson Bosh was born on March 24, 1984 at Dallas Texas. Ever since his early years at Lincoln High School, the power forward has managed to make some noise in the sports media.
Bosh was the 4th selection of the 2003 NBA draft and was picked by the Toronto Raptors. Bosh managed to make it as one of the most promising young players in the league. Ever since he has emerged as a professional player, Bosh has been a five time NBA-All star, made it to the All-NBA team and was part of the USA Olympic Basketball team that managed to win a gold medal at the 2008 Olympic Games.
He also managed to win over the Toronto Raptors fan base and in a way fill in the big shoes left by Vince Carter not only as the team leader but also as the face of the team. He is Toronto all-time leader in points, rebounds, blocks, double doubles and free throws.
And now he is making a lot of noise. It was quite clear that the Toronto Raptor needed to step up and make some important changes in their squad. Make it more competitive if you will, if they had any chance of keeping Bosh around once he became a free agent. Much speculation came from the press once Bosh, Dwayne Wade and LeBron James were left as a free agent. At one point it seemed as if the three players might had ended up in one same team.
Now both Bosh and Wade share the same agent. It has yet to be announced if all of the parts have come to an official agreement, and the details about the transaction are still to be known. LeBron James has said that he will be giving out details about his professional future once on Thursday on an exclusive interview for ESPN. Rumor has it that all of the three big names in the free agent category might end up playing together. If that were the case, it would come down to Miami.
And that is when it gets quite interesting for the NBA sports betting fans. There are going to be some very interesting changes in the odds to win the 2010-2011 NBA Championship if as rumor has it, Lebron James, Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade end up playing at Miami. Things would really start to weight in and neither the LA Laker nor the Boston Celtics would take up the biggest side of the odds.
Despite what seems as a dream team there is still much to be said about the financial department when it comes to the Miami Heat. Miami has enough budget to give Bosh and Wade max deals, but still, the Heat's management would have to do some bargain-shopping to fill its squad for the coming year. As of press time only Michael Beasley and Mario Chalmers are still under contract.
It's going to be an interesting week for NBA fans around. Finally Lebron James might end up in a team that has a real shot at the NBA title. Or perhaps he is still going to be the king with no crown. The bottom line is that all of these players have to play up to their salary. That hopefully means that 2010-2011 NBA Championship is going to be epic.
